Welcome to Backcast Ranch

Our family moved to Bozeman, Montana in 1995 and immediately began looking for a remote property that would reward us forever. After years of searching, we settled on the acreage we call Backcast Ranch. The ranch is located approximately 25 miles south of Big Timber, Montana. The unique characteristics of Backcast make it the ideal mountain relaxation destination. The ranch shares a boundary with the Gallatin National Forest and has one quarter mile of the pristine (and essentially private) East Boulder River flowing through it. In addition, the property is blessed with several warm springs that provide year round open water which attracts all manner of animals (see Fauna tab).  As you will see, even at 20 degrees below zero, the pond's surfaces are unfrozen.

The outdoor activities are only limited by the interests of our guests. Fishing literally begins right outside your door. Hiking begins on the property. In the spring, raft trips on the Main Boulder River are available. Year round trips into Yellowstone are always a treat. If you are a serious fly fisherman, float trips on the Yellowstone can be arranged as well as customized fishing on many Montana streams and rivers.

If your interests are less physical, the property is blessed with a wide array of wild flowers (seasonal) and wildlife viewing (also somewhat seasonal). Please see the Flora and Fauna tabs for images taken on the property. In kind of a quirky and incongruous way, Backcast also has a significant library of historical books, a collection of historical documents and stereograph images (see Historical Items tab) and a shooting range. How is that for diversity of interest?

We constructed the improvements on the property with the vision of maintaining natural harmony as well as providing luxurious accommodations for our guests. We believe that you will be quite surprised at the quality that surrounds you during your stay.

Even if you cannot be our guest, we hope that you will tour our website and enjoy the photos taken on the ranch. All photos of animals were taken from our living room, the Main House back deck or the driveway. We do not have to go far to enjoy the majesty of nature.

P.S. - It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that we moved from this glorious place in September 2022.
